I have a piece of paper taped to my studio wall that says “Get Out of The Way.”  It’s this phrase that in a way embodies the tension behind most paintings of mine; to nail the small details with accuracy, but not overthink the painting to the point of extracting the mood from it.  Each piece captures a moment, and the challenge is to represent the technical aspects of the scene while recreating the experience.  Impossible?  Mostly.  But if I can startle you with a detail, and at the same time create a feeling, I’m part way there.  The rest of the experience is for you…your point of view and what brought you to look at my work…your own tripwires of association…your bias or lack thereof.

Art is risky business.  What comes from inside me will never be percieved in the same way by someone else...but then again it shouldn't be.  My job is just to set the idea free.
